Hymns for the 5th Sunday in Lent, Year C (3 April 2022) - Catholic lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the fifth Sunday of Lent, Year C.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that are still be copyright may also included, if they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Seasonal note

The Year A Mass readings may be used today, especially if  a pre-baptismal / RCIA scrutiny is being held.



Readings

First: Isaiah 43: 16-21 - The Lord says ... I am making a road in the wilderness, ... rivers in the wild to give my chosen people water.

Psalm 125 - What marvels the Lord worked for us, indeed we are glad / When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage / Deliver us O Lord / They go out full of tears.

Second: Philippians 3:8-14  - Nothing can happen that will outweigh the advantage of knowing Christ my saviour - I have accepted loss of everything for the him.

Gospel: Luke 8: 1-11 - The woman caught in adultery.


Themes

Faith in God - following a new path.   Christ's forgiveness - sinfulness is wiped away.   New beginnings.

  1. You know, many of the public domain songs are available as very good page scans that print well (high resolution in JP2 format) at Hymnary.org.
    Just scroll near the bottom, click on a scan, then at the bottom left of the low res scan is a link to "High Resolution."
    I was surprised you didn't have a link to "Lord who Throughout These Forty Days"

      Most links here are complete information pages for hymns, including background information, PowerPoint slides, examples, and also sheet music where available - and there's now a page in place for Lord Who Throughout These Forty Days. Thanks for the suggestion.
