Hymn ideas for St Patrick's Day celebrations

A selection of hymns and songs, based on
  • St Patrick's life
  • Themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary readings for the Feast of St Patrick
  • Popular devotion to Patrick, and hymns associated with Ireland.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) so the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Seasonal note

If St Patrick's feast-day falls on a Sunday, consult guidelines from the local bishop's conference about whether the feast-day readings and themes are used.

Readings (Feast of St Patrick):

First: Jeremiah - Before I formed you in the womb I knew you ... you are anointed a prophet to the nations.

Psalm: Psalm 116 - Go out to the whole world and tell the Good News.

Second: Acts - I have made you a light for the nations, so my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

Gospel: Luke - Jesus sends 72 out to preach - they are welcomes in his name.
