Hymn suggestions for the Feast of the Sacred Heart (19 days after Pentecost)

A selection of  hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus or on the devotions traditionally associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), so words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A few hymns which may still be copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a messages in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Seasonal note

This day is celebrated 19 days after Pentcost, ie on the 50th day of Easter.   It is immediately before the Soleminty of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Readings

First: Deuteronomy 7 - You are a people holy to the Lord ... God has chosen you out of all the peoples on earth to be his people, ... not because you were more numerous but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath that he swore to your ancestors ... rescuing you from Egypt.

Psalm 103 - The Lord's kindness is everlasting to those who fear him / Bless the Lord all my soul / He pardons all your inequities / Merciful and gracious is the Lord.

Second: 1 John 7 - Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. ... God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

Gospel: Matthew 11 - Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; ... no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest ... For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”.
