About Our Lady of Mt Carmel
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to Mary, as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The original members of this order were hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land from the late 12th, This was a beautiful area, named in scripture as the place where the prophet Elijah defended Israel's faith in the living God. They built a chapel which was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, who they called "the Lady of the place"Tradition says that Mary gave a scapular to Saint Simon Stock, who was an early Carmelite. This scapular became a sacramental which people associate with Mary giving them special assistance toward salvation.
Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel been based on the scapular, which is also known as the Brown Scapular, and the history and values of the Carmelite order. When a person "receives the scapular", they become a member of the Carmelite order and pledge to live according to its spirituality, depending of course on their state in life."
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on 16 July each year.
