Hymns for the 5th Sunday of Lent, Year B

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the fifth Sunday of Lent, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright, but are a particularly good fit for the day's readings, are also included.

Seasonal note

The Year A Mass readings may be used today, especially if  a pre-baptismal / RCIA scrutiny is being held.

Readings

First: Jeremiah 31 - The prophet speaks of the new covenant the Lord will make with Israel ... I will be their God and they will be my people.

Psalm 136 - A pure heart create for me, O God.

Second: Hebrews 5 - Christ offered up prayer to the one who had the power to save him - he learnt to obey through suffering .. and became the source of eternal salvation.

Gospel: John 12 - Jesus predicts his death .. unless a grain of what dies it remains a single grain but if it dies it yields a rich harvest ... a voice from heaven says "I have glorified it and will glorify it again".
