Hymns for the 3rd Sunday of Lent, Year A (8 March 2026) - Catholic lectionary

Hymn and song suggestions, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the third Sunday of Lent, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that are still copyright may also be included, if these are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:  Exodus 17:3-7 - the people complained to Moses of their thirst, so he appealed to God who guided him to strike a rock at Horeb and draw water.

Psalm 94 - O that today you would listen to his voice, harden not your hearts / Come ring out our joy to the Lord / Come in, let us bow and bend low.

Second: Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 - the love of God has been poured into your hearts by the Holy Spirit ... Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

Gospel: John 4:5-52 - Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink at the well.

Themes

Jesus, the water, who assuages our thirst by pouring the Holy Spirit
