About Mary Mother of the Church
The title was "Mother of the Church" (in Latin "Mater Ecclesiae") is not new: It was first used by Saint Ambrose in the 4th century, an dit was also used by Pope Benedict XIV in 1748 and Pope Leo XIII in 1885.Later, it was solemnly proclaimed by Pope Paul VI at the closing of the third session of Vatican II in November 1964.
Pope John Paul II said that the title shows the Mary's motherhood of Christ's faithful, which derives from her motherhood of Christ.
The observance was introduced to the liturgical calendar by Pope Francis in 2018. See here for more information about the announcement.
