Hymns about humility

This is a selection of hymns about humility, ie the state of being humble.

The list is inspired by the Parable of the Wedding Feast, told in Luke 14:15-24, where Jesus teaches humility using a story about how to behave at an event. But it is not limited to just hymns about this parable.

It is divided into two parts:   free-use materials that can be freely used with no concerns about copyright (because they are in the public domain), and hymns that may still be copyright depending on the laws in your country.

About humility

Humility, ie the quality of being humble, in is about recognising yourself in relation to God: It involves
  • Submitting to God and to legitimate authority
  • Recognsing the virtues and talents that other people possess and giving due recognition
  • Recognizing the limits of your own talents, ability, and authority.

Being humble, ie exercising humility is sometimes defined as being "unselved", ie a form of temperance which lies in between having pride (haughtiness, undue regard of yourself and lack of regard for God) at one end of the spectrum, and indulging in self-deprecation (unnecessary and untrue self-denouncement which keeps the focus on yourself rather than God's grace).

Humility is particularly associated with Saint Francis of Assisi, and also with St Jospeh.
