Prayer for the Synod: Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus

The prayer "Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus" is a Latin-language
"invocation to the Holy Spirit for an ecclesial assembly of governance or discernment".
It is attributed to St. Isidore of Seville (560-636), and has been traditionally used at church Councils and Synods for hundreds of years.    It was prayed at the start of every session of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II).

An adapted version has been prepared for use in 2021-23, in preparation for the Synod on Synodality (read more about this here).   This is distributed in various translations, including English - the translator is unknown.   The English text is shown below.

Two sets of PowerPoint slides are provided below.   One uses the layout proposed by the Vatican and is three slides long.  The other has the same text but is in a more compact two-slide layout.

Words (full text) of the prayer

We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.

With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.

We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.

Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.

All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen.

  1. I think the prayer's Latin original is from Pontificale Romanum, section "Ordo ad synodum".

    1. Actually, the English Adsumus prayer above is a simplified translation of the Latin prayer in Pontificale Romanum. I haven't found a Latin version of the simplified prayer. The original Latin prayer with an English translation is here: https://saintjohnofjerusalem.blogspot.com/2017/04/adsumus-domine-sancte-spiritus.html
