Hymns for the 3nd Sunday in Lent, Year B - Revised Common Lectionary (3 March 2024)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common  lectionary for the third Sunday of Lent, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright, but are a particularly good fit for the day's readings, are also included.

Readings

First: Exodus 20:1-17 - The Ten Commandments, as spoken by God to Moses.

Psalm: 19 - The heavens are telling the glory of God ...

Second: I Corinthians 1:18-25 - Paul reflects on the crucified Christ - who does not satisfy the Jews who look for miracles or the Greeks who look for wisdom - but who reflects the power and wisdom of God to those who are called.

Gospel: John 2:13-22 - Jesus drives the money changers from the Temple, and then makes predictions about how long it will take to rebuild it.

Themes

Wisdom.   God's law vs human law.
