Hymns for Proper 10 - 15th Ordinary in Year B (8th Sunday after Pentecost, 14 July 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper Ten (fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary time) in Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good fit for the theme(s).

Suggestions about hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comment box near the bottom of this page.

Readings

1st  2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19 - David and the people went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God out of the house of Abinadab to the city of David, to its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it.  David and all the house of Israel were dancing and singing and with the sound of the trumpet, and David sacrificed an ox and a fatling, and distributed food among the people.
with  Psalm 24 - The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;

OR
Amos 7:12-15 - Amos explains that he didn't decide to be a prophet by himself, but that he did what God told him to do, even though the establishment didn't want him there.
with Psalm 84:  Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help / I will hear what the Lord will say / Mercy and faithfulness have met / The Lord will make us prosper

2nd - Ephesians 1:3-14 - a poetic description of the beautiful way God deals with us - God chose us as His own.

Gospel - Mark 6:14-29 -  Herod's daughter asks for John the baptizer's head on a platter" - Herod was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he sent a soldier who beheaded John, and brought his head back: When his disciples heard, they took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
