Hymns for Proper 11 (16th Ordinary) (9th Sunday after Pentecost, 21 July 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper 11 - sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary time, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Readings

First:
2 Samuel 7:1-14a - The king says to the prophet Nathan, "I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent."  then the word of the Lord comes to Nathan to ask David if he will be the one to build a house (temple) for God - and promised that when David's days are fulfilled, God will raise up David's offspring to establish his kingdom.
with Psalm 89 - I have found my servant David;

OR

Jeremiah 23:1-6 — Shepherds who neglect their flocks are condemned, as God promises to intervene for the sake of the people — just as a good shepherd would do.
with  Psalm: Psalm 22 (23) - The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

Second: Ephesians 2:11-22 - Christ, by his blood, ends hostility and brings people together.

Gospel:  Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 - Jesus encourages the apostles to rest, but takes pity on the people also - wherever he went, people recognised him and asked for healing.
