Hymns for Proper 11 (16), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (8th Sunday after Pentecost, 23 July 2023)

A selection hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Sunday of Proper eleven, Year A.

Most are "Free-to-use" meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  Some hymns that are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about other hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.
Genesis 28:10-19a - Jacob slept with a stones under his head.  He dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. ....God said "I am the Lord , the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring ...  Know that I am with you ..."   Jacob woke up saying ... "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.".
OR
Wisdom 12: 13, 16-19- Although you are sovereign in strength, you judge with mildness, and with great forbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose. Through such works you have taught your people that the righteous must be kind, and you have filled your children with good hope,...

Second: Romans 8: 12-25-  ...we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Gospel: Matthew 13 24-30, 36-43 - The parable of the weeds / tares / darnel in the wheat Jesus preached in parables to fulfill scripture - and he explained them: ... “the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!".

Themes

God as a compassionate and merciful judge.   Our assurance of forgiveness because God sent his Son.
