Hymns for the 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A (15 October 2023) - Catholic lectionary

Hymn and song suggestions, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the twenty eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning that the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that are still copyright may also be included, if these are particularly appropriate.

Readings

First: Isaiah 26:6-10 - On this mountain, the Lord will prepare a banquet ... remove the mourning veil ... destroy death forever.   ...   It will be said "We exult and rejoice that he had saved us..."

Psalm 22 - In the Lord's own house I will dwell for ever and ever / The Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want / He guides me along the right path / You have prepared a banquet for me / Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me.

Second: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 - Paul reflects on his life and notes that there is nothing he cannot master with the help of the One who gives him strength:  He acknowledges the companionship he received, and prays that God will fulfil the Philippianss needs.

Gospel: Matthew 22: 1-14 - The parable of the wedding banquet: the invited guests would not attend - the servants gathered guests from the highways ... many are called, few are chosen.

Themes

God fulfils our needs through Christ.   All are invited, no matter how unworthy - God is forgiving.  Gathering in God's house.

  1. Table of Plenty fits with the theme of a feast or banquet
