This article lists various on-line which may be useful for less-skilled musicians who are transposing or arranging music or preparing lead sheets.

This website shows common progressions, in your choice of key.


Chord Transposer

A simple-to-use on-line tool for transposing guitar chords from one key to another:   just enter your chords, and choose the starting and ending chords.


Musical Scales and Chords

This is a website includes chord name lookup, chord finder, scale finder, etc.


HymnQuest

This is a tool originally produced by music publishers Stainer & Bell and now by the Fred Pratt Green trust.  It includes

  • Full-text search across hymn words, phrases, dates and names.
  • A search function to identify hymn tunes from their first few notes. This is is effectively an on-line index-of-tunes: you enter a series of notes, ii calculates the enharmonic intervals and suggests hymn tunes which match the pattern, irrespective of key or time values. Backed by a database of 400+ hymnals.
This is a commercial product, available only in the UK and Republic of Ireland.   It is linked to (but separate from) CCLI and Calamus church copyright licenses.
