Hymns about the parable of the unforgiving / unmerciful / wicked servant

This is a selection of hymns based on the parable of the unforgiving servant.

It does not include general hymns about forgiveness - just ones which relate directly to the story.

The list is grouped into two sections:
  • Free-use (either copyright has expired, or the author has allowed them to be freely used)
  • Still subject to copyright and so can only be used if you are covered by a copyright license.

Both children's and adults hymns / songs are included in each list - because except for the youngest of children, it is is difficult to draw a clear distinction between them.

About the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

Sometimes called the Ungrateful Servant, Unmerciful Servant, Unforgiving Official, Wicked Servant, Tortured Debtor,  this story is only in the Gospel of Matthew 18:21-35.

It is a story of forgiveness from the heart:   it opens with Peter asking Jesus how many times he must forgive his brother, and then Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven with a king who forgives his servant's debts, but then find that the servant is not similarly merciful to his own debtors.
