Hymns for the 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B (23 June 2024) - Catholic lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the twelfth Sunday of Ordinary time, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Suggestions about other use hymns are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Seasonal note

In some years, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist (always 24 June) falls on a Sunday around this time.   When that happens, the liturgy for that feast is used.

Readings

First: Job 38:1, 8-11 - From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer ... Who pent up the sea? ... some this far, I said, and no further: here your proud waves shall break.

Psalm 106 - O give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever / Some sailed to the sea in ships / For he spoke, he summoned the gale / Then they cried to the Lord in their need / They rejoiced because of the calm.

Second: Corinthians 5:14-17 - For anyone who is in Christ there is a new creation.

Acclamation:  Luke:7:16 - They were all filled with awe ...

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41 - Jesus calms the storm at sea.

Themes

Storm on the lake / Job's answer: who pent up the sea / For anyone in Christ a new creation - a great prophet.  The power and protection of God, who is mightier than the sea / storm.  Conquering chaos.
