Hymns for the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B (30 June 2024) - Catholic lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary time, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Seasonal note

When the the Solemnity of St Peter and Paul (29 June) falls on a Sunday, or the bishops in a country choose to observe it on the nearest Sunday, then the readings etc for it is used instead of the Sunday readings.

Readings

First:  Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 - God made man imperishable .. in the image of his own nature:  it was the devil's envy that brought death into the world.

Psalm 29 - I will praise you Lord, you have rescued me / Sing psalms to the Lord you who love him / The Lord listened and had pity.

Second: Corinthians 8:7.  9:13-15 - Remember how generous the Lord was:  he was rich, but he became poor for your sake ... it is a question of balancing what happens to be your surplus now against present need.

Gospel: Mark 5:21-43 - Jesus heals the haemorrhaging woman, and raises Jairus' daughter from the dead.

Themes

Jesus as giver of life - we were made to live, not to die.   The Kingdom is close at hand.   The apostles as servants of God's people.    God's covenant.   The people of God.    Christ as mediator of the kingdom.   Spreading the Good News
