Hymns for the 2nd Sunday of Advent, Year A (7 Dec 2025) - Revised Common Lectionary

Hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the second Sunday of Advent in Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small number of hymns which are still copyright may be included, if these are particularly appropriate.

Readings

First: Isaiah 11: 1-10 - A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse ... as a signal to the nations.

Psalm 71 : In his days justice shall flourish and peace 'til the moon fails / O God give your judgement to the king / For he shall save the poor when they cry / May his name be blessed forever.

Second: Romans 15: 4-13 : Everything written in the scriptures was meant to teach us ... it can only be to God's glory for you to treat each other in the same was as Christ treated you.

Gospel: Matthew 3: 1-12 - John the Baptist preached ... and said "I baptize in water for repentance, the one who follows me is more powerful".

Themes

Justice / social concerns.   Preparing for the coming of the Lord - the Kingdom is close at hand.
