Hymns for the 5th Sunday after Epiphany, Year A (5 February 2023) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of  hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the fifth Sunday after Epiphany in, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of copyright hymns may also be included if they are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:  Isaiah 58: 1-9 - Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the homeless poor ... your integrity will go before you ... cry and the Lord will answer "here I am" ... your light will rise in the darkness:  What God requires is justice and refraining from evil

Psalm 111 - The good man is a light in the darkness for the upright / The just man will never waver / With a steadfast heart he will no fear.

Second: I Corinthians 2: 1-12 - I came to tell you what God had guaranteed ... the only knowledge I claimed to have was about Jesus, and only about him as the crucified Christ.  ... And I did this so your faith should not depend on human philosophy but on the power of God.  These things, God has revealed to us though the spirit.

Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-20- You are the salt of the earth.  But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again?  ... You are the light of the world:  no one lights a lamp to put it under a tub, they put it on a lampstand to shine for all the household.   Your light must shine in the sight of all.
