Hymns for the 5th Sunday in Lent, Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (26 March 2023)

Hymns and song suggestions based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the fifth Sunday of Lent, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Readings

First: Ezekiel 37: 1-14 - The Lord says ... I am going to open your graves and lead you back to Israel.   I shall put my spirit in you, and you will live.

Psalm: Psalm 129 - With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption / Out of the depths I cry to you /  If you should mark our guilt / My soul is waiting for the Lord.

Second: Romans 8:6-11 -The Spirit of God has made his home in you - your spirit is life itself because you have been justified.

Gospel: John 11:1-45 - Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.
