Hymns for Resurrection / Easter Sunday, Year B - Revised Common Lectionary (31 March 2024)

Hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord (Easter Sunday), Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Readings  NOT STARTED

First:
Acts 10:34-43 - Peter gives Cornelius an eyewitness account of Jesus:  his life and work, his death and his resurrection.
OR
Isaiah 25:6-9
On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast ... he will swallow up death forever ... will wipe away the tears from all faces...   This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Psalm: 118 - This day was made by the Lord, we rejoice and are glad / Give thanks to the Lord / The Lord's right hand has triumphed / The stone which the builders rejected.

Second:
1 Corinthians 15:1-11  Paul reminds the Corinthians that ... he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time,  ... then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.  Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
OR
Acts 10:34-43 - see above

Gospel:
John 20:1-18 - Mary of Magdala discovers that the tomb is open, she tells the disciples and they go to the tomb .. they saw and understood and believed.   Mary remains in the tomb weeping, Jesus appears to her, but tells her that he must ascend to the Father.
OR
Mark 16:1-8  Mary Magdalene and the women went to the tomb, found that the stone had already been rolled back, and saw a young man, dressed in a white robe who told them "He has been raised ... he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you."
