Hymns for Proper 8 (13th Ordinary) (6th Sunday after Pentecost, 30 June 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised common lectionary for Sunday of Proper eight / thirteenth Ordinary in Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Suggestions about other hymns are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.
2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 - After the death of Saul, David intoned a lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan ... How the mighty have fallen!   ... Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! ... O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul ...I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
OR
Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 - God made man imperishable .. in the image of his own nature:  it was the devil's envy that brought death into the world.

Psalm 29 - I will praise you Lord, you have rescued me / Sing psalms to the Lord you who love him / The Lord listened and had pity.

Second: Corinthians 8:7-15 - Remember how generous the Lord was:  he was rich, but he became poor for your sake ... it is a question of balancing what happens to be your surplus now against present need.

Gospel: Mark 5:21-43 - Jesus heals the haemorrhaging woman, and raises Jairus' daughter from the dead.
