Hymns for Proper 8 (13), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (5th Sunday after Pentecost, 2 July 2023)

A selection of  hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Proper 8 (Ordinary Time 13) Sunday in Year A.

Most are free-to-use, meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.   Many of these hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of hymns that are still subject to copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: .
Genesis 22:1-14 - God tested Abraham, by telling him to offer him as a burnt offering:  Each time Abraham replies "Here I am" and does what the Lord asks.
OR  Jeremiah 28:5-9
The prophet speaks of the Lord bringing from Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles.... As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet."

Second: Romans 6:12-23 - A reflection on sin and eternal life:   "...thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Gospel:  Matt 10: 40-42 - Whoever welcomes you welcomes me ... the reward for those who welcome a prophet, a righteous person, even those who give a cup of cold water ...  in the name of a disciple.
