Introducing the Directory on Homiletics

The Directory on Homiletics is a document for priests and others who are required to preach sermons at Roman Catholic Masses.

It was produced by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments during 2014, and the English translation was released in February 2015.

It has one section which may be useful to liturgy committees, musicians and others who have to prepare material (eg music, environmental, art) to support regular Masses. This is Appendix One which:
  • Lists the official readings for each Sunday or feast day
  • Names the major theme/message associated with them, and
  • Links these to the appropriate section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The latter two may help people to make appropriate judgements for their local situation, based on the overall message of the readings for the particular feast or day.

The listing is based on the overall liturgy cycle, rather than specific yearly or local dates: check your local liturgical calendar for the year to see what Mass is to be used on a specific date.

Some American commentators believe that the document is not as good as the most recent preaching guidelines issued by their bishops.   Read more about their thoughts here.
