Hymns for the 10th Sunday after Pentecost - Proper 15 (20), Year C (14 August 2022) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the tenth Sunday after Pentecost in Year C.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:
Isaiah 5:1-7  - The prophet compares a vineyard which yields wild-grapes to the ... vineyard of the LORD of hosts; The people of Judah are his planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!

OR   Jeremiah 23: 23-29 - Am I a God near by, says the LORD, and not a God far off? ... Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. ... Is not my word like fire... and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

Second:
Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2
- We should throw off anything that hinders - especially sin - and keep running steadily in the race.   Let us not lose sight of Jesus.

Gospel:
Luke 12:49-56 - I am here to bring division / fire on the earth:- households will be divided against themselves - sons against fathers, mothers against daughters.

Themes

God as our protector in times of difficulty.   The Christian life is not easy - solidarity, strength for the journey.  Setting the world on fire.
