Hymns for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost - Proper 18 (23), Year C (4 September 2022) - Revised Common Lectionary

Hymns and songs suggestions based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost in Year C.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection on hymns which are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: Jeremiah 18:1-11 - The prophet sees a potter at work, re-shaping a pot which was not right ... Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. ....Turn now, all of you from your evil ways
OR
Deuteronomy 30:15-20 - If you obey the commandments of the Lord... then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.  Choose life, not death.

Second: Philemon 1: 1-21 - .....Paul writes to Philemon, Apphia, Archippus and the church in their house:  he is sending, a run-away slave to them, and requests them to welcome him as they would welcome Paul himself.

Gospel:   Luke 14: 25-33 -  Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple ... none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.

Themes

Like Christ, we are called to give up everything to know and serve God.   Self-sacrifice, love and  service - the cost of discipleship.
