The Evening Prayer of Cardinal Newman

John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was an Englishman who was raised, educated and originally ordained as a priest in the Anglican church.  He was a prominent member of the Oxford Movement, and research he carried out made him suspect that the Roman Catholic Church was in closest continuity with the Church established by Jesus. In 1845, he entered the Catholic, and in 1847 he was ordained as a Catholic priest.   He was named a cardinal in 1879.

He was a writer, producing 40 books and 21,000 surviving letters - and a number of prayers which have become popular.   This is one of them, for evening.

Words (full text) of the prayer

O Lord support us all the day long,
Till the shadows lengthen and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in his mercy may he give us a safe lodging,
and holy rest, and peace at the last.
Amen
