Hymns for the 6th Sunday after Epiphany, Year A (12 February 2023) - Revised Common Lectionary

Hymn and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the sixth Sunday after Epiphany, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning  the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A few hymns which are still copyright may also be included if they are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:
Deuteronomy 30:15-20
If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God ... then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away ... you shall perish .... Choose life so that you and your descendants may live ..loving your God, obeying him
OR
Sirach 15: 15-20  -  If you choose, you can keep the commandments ... God has given no one permission to sin.

Psalm 118 - They are happy who follow God's law / They are happy whose life is blameless / You have laid down your precepts / bless your servant and I shall live / Teach me the demands of your statutes.

Second: I Corinthians 3:1-9 - And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ ...when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human?   For we are all God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building.

Gospel: Matthew 5:21-37 - Jesus says "I have not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to complete them" and explains certain aspects of the Law in light of his teaching.

Themes

The law of Christ and the wisdom of God.  Jesus as the fulfilment of the Law and Prophets.
