Hymns for Transfiguration Sunday / the Sunday before Lent, Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (19 Feb 2023)

A selection of hymn and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for Transfiguration Sunday in Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), so the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that may still be copyright are also included, if these are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: Exodus 24:12-18  -  Moses goes to the Mt Sinai in response to the Lord's call:   cloud covers it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses.  The glory of the LORD appeared to be a devouring fire - Moses enters the cloud and stays on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Second: 2 Peter 1:16-21  -  Jesus, received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice said , "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." ... Be attentive to this prophetic message as to a lamp shining in a dark place:  prophecy comes by men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Gospel:
Matthew 17:1-9
Jesus took  Peter and James and John and up a high mountain ... and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white.   Moses and Elijah, appeared talking with him.   Peter offers to make three tents, the Lord says  "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"

Themes

Transfiguration, transformation.  Light.   My son, the beloved.
