Hymns for Proper 17 (OT 22), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (14th Sunday after Pentecost, 3 September 2023)

Hymn and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper 17 in Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), so the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of hymns that may still be copyright are also included, if these are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:
Exodus 3:1-15:   Moses led the flock to Horeb, the mountain of God, where the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a burning bush - God says "You are standing on holy ground .. I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham ..." - and then sends him to Pharaoh to bring  the Israelites, out of Egypt.  Moses asks God what name to use - God replies "I AM .."

Jeremiah 15:15-21
The prophet says ... your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, and asks why his pain is unceasing.  The lord says "If you turn back, I will take you back" and "I am with you to save you and deliver you"

Second: Romans 12: 9-21 - Paul's manifesto for living as a Christian:  Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; Love one another ... Rejoice in hope ... Bless those who persecute you ... Live in harmony with one another ...Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Gospel: Matthew  16: 21-28  - Jesus begins showing disciples that he suffer, be killed, and on the third day be raised. Peter rebukes him, but Jesus identifies this response as .. "setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. ” “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
