Hymns for Proper 22 (OT 27), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (19th Sunday after Pentecost, 8 Oct 2023)

Hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper 22, Year A.

Most are  free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of hymns that are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate.

Suggestions about hymns that could be included are welcome: Please leave a message in the Comments section below.

Readings

First:
Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20:  God gives the ten commandments to Moses - they people see and they are afraid of God.
OR
Isaiah 5:1-7 - The prophet compares Jerusalem with a vineyard that only produces sour grapes. ...  The Lord of hosts expected justice but found bloodshed, expected integrity but found only a cry of distress

Second: Philippians 3:4b-14 - Whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. ... I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death .... I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 21:33-46 - Parable of the wicked tenants who killed the vineyard owner's son - the stone the builders rejected became the keystone - the kingdom will be given to a people who will produce its fruit.

Themes

The Church as the vineyard of the Lord.    God as the creator of all.  Our need to examine our lives to see if we are bearing fruit.
