Hymns for Proper 25 (OT 30), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (22nd Sunday after Pentecost, 29 Oct 2023)

A selection of hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper 25, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Readings

First:
Deuteronomy 34:1-12 - The LORD showed Moses the land of which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.   Then Moses died there in the land of Moab and was buried in a valley.   The Israelites mourned for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days.  Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the LORD had commanded Moses.

OR   Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18 - The LORD told to Moses, telling him to tell the people to be holy, behave justly and love their neighbours.

Second: I Thessalonians 1:5-10 - Paul reflects that the people took to the gospel with the joy of the Holy Spirit, that the broke with idolatry and were converted to God and are now waiting for Jesus to come from heaven.

Gospel: Matthew 22: 34-40 - The Pharisees put Jesus to the test by asking about the greatest commandment - he answer "love the Lord your God ... and love your neighbour as yourself."

Themes
