Hymns for the Reign of Christ - (Proper 29) Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (26 Nov 2023)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Reign of Christ (Christ the King) in Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright, but are a particularly good fit for the day's readings, are also included.

Readings

Ezekiel  34:11-16, 20-24 - For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out .. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; ... I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep ...I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd

Psalm 22/23 - The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want / Near restful waters he leads me / You have prepared a banquet for me / Surely goodness and kindness

Second:  Ephesians 1:15-23 -
Paul tells the community of Ephesis that he gives thanks for them, and prays that God may give them ... a spirit of wisdom and revelation ... and come to know him fully.

Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 - Jesus tells the disciples that when the Son of Man comes .. he will take up his seat on the throne of glory and separate men as the shepherd separates sheep and goats ... the Kingdom will be given to the virtuous

Themes

Christ the King - who cares for his people like a shepherd.   Living justly.
