Hymns for Proper 7 (12th Ordinary) (5th Sunday after Pentecost, 23 June 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper Seven (twelfth Sunday of Ordinary time) in Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Readings

First: 
1 Samuel 17:(1a, 4-11, 19-23), 32-49 - the battle of David and Goliath.
OR
1 Samuel 17:57-18:5, 18:10-16  - After David's kills Goliath, he is taken to Saul ... David had success in all his undertakings; for the LORD was with him. ... When Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him.  But all Israel and Judah loved David; for it was he who marched out and came in leading them.

OR
Job 38:1, 8-11 - From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer ... Who pent up the sea? ... some this far, I said, and no further: here your proud waves shall break.

Second: 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 - Paul urges the Corinthians not to accept the grace of God in vain, but to see, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation - and to open wide their hearts .

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41 - Jesus calms the storm at sea.



Themes

Storm on the lake / Job's answer: who pent up the sea / For anyone in Christ a new creation - a great prophet.  The power and protection of God, who is mightier than the sea / storm.  Conquering chaos.
