Hymns for Proper 7 (12), Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (4th Sunday after Pentecost, 25 June 2023)

A selection of  hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for Proper 7 (Ordinary time 12) in Year A.

Most are free-to-use, meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.   Many of these hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.  A small selection of hymns that are still subject to copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: Leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:
Genesis 21:8-21 - As Isaac grew, Sarah was jealous of the son of Abraham and Hagar the Egyptian slave:  She asks Abraham to cast them out.  This distressed Abraham, but God reassured him, and he sent Hagar out to the wilderness.  When she ran out of water, she wept.  God responded to her distress and provided a well, saying "Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy".  God was with them as the boy grew in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow.
OR   Jeremiah 20:3-17 - The prophet is disparaged from every side, but knows that God is near ... praise the Lord for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hands of evil ones.

Psalm: 68 - In your great love answer me O God / It is for you that I suffer taunts / This is my prayer to you / The poor when they see it will be glad.

Second: Romans 6:1b-11 - ... consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Gospel:  Matt 10: 24-39 - Do not be afraid ... you are worth more than a hundred sparrows .. if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in heaven.
