Hymns for Proper 21 / Ordinary 26 in Year B (19th Sunday after Pentecost, 29 September 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary


A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the twenty-sixth Sunday of Proper 21 / Ordinary 27, in Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns that are still be copyright may also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Readings

First: 
Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 - Esther intercedes with the King to ask for relief of the people from having being sold by Haman - the king had Haman killed, and Mordecai enjoined the Jews to keep the fourteenth and fifteenth day of Adar a a memorial of the time they were been turned from sorrow into gladness.
OR
Numbers 11:4-5, 10-16, 25-29 - The gift of prophecy is given to Eldad and Medad - Moses is pleased, Joshua is jealous on his behalf

Psalm: 18:   The precepts of the Lord gladden the heart / The law of the Lord is perfect

Second: James 5: 13-20 - Instructions for suffering, prayer and anointing ... whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner's soul from death.

Gospel: Mark 9:38-50 - Anyone who is not against us is for us - purge yourself from sin - do not be an obstacle to those who have faith.

Living faithfully in the faith, discern what is God's will and follow it, acting in service of other people, welcoming the gifts that God has given to all people.
