Hymns for the 5th Sunday of Easter, Year B (28 April 2024) - Catholic lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the fifth Sunday of Easter, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: Acts 9:26-31 - Saul is introduced to the disciples by Barnabas, and joins them in preaching - he angers the Hellenists and his life is in danger so he is sent to Tarsus.   But the churches in Judea, Galilee and Samaria are left in peace to build themselves up.

Psalm 21 - You, Lord, are my praise in the great assembly /  My vows I will pay before those who fear him / All the earth shall remember and return to the Lord /  And my soulshall live for him, my children shall serve him.

Second  I John 3:18-24 - His commandments are these:  believe in the name of his son, Jesus ... and love one another as he told us to..

Gospel: John 15:1-8 - Jesus says "I am the true vine ... you are the branches, remain in me ... it is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit".

Themes

Bearing fruit of the Good News.   Jesus as the true vine.   We are branches of Christ.
