Hymns for the 5th Sunday of Easter, Year B - Revised Common Lectionary (28 April 2024)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the fifth Sunday of Easter, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Suggestions about other hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

First: Acts 8:26-40 - An angel sent Philip traveling.  He met an Ethiopian a court official who was reading the prophet Isaiah.   Philip shared the scripture and proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. Philip baptized him, then was sent on by the Lord to Azotus, and he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

Psalm 21 - You, Lord, are my praise in the great assembly ....

Second 1 John 4:7-21 -
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God .. God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him ... The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

Gospel: John 15:1-8 - Jesus says "I am the true vine ... you are the branches, remain in me ... it is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit".

Bearing fruit of the Good News.   Jesus as the true vine.   We are branches of Christ.
