Hymns for the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C (23 January 2022)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns that are still be copyright may also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

The  third Sunday of Ordinary Time has also been nominated as the day to observe Sunday of the Word of God:  Any hymns based directly on Scripture may be helpful to support this, and a list of hymns about The Word of God has been prepared.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

First: Nehemaih 8:2-6, 8-10 - Ezra read to the people from the Book of the Law.  The people were moved to tears by God's word.  Ezra announced a day of feasting for "this day is sacred to our Lord".

Psalm: Psalm 18 - Your words Lord spirit, Lord and they are life / The law of the Lord is perfect / The fear of the Lord is holy

Second: I Corinthians 12: 12-30 - Together you are all Christ's body, but each of you is a different part of it.

Gospel: Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 - Luke's account of Jesus return to Nazareth, and his reading in the temple "The spirit of the Lord has been given to me ...  to bring good news to the poor ..."
