Hymns for the 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C (14 August 2022) - Catholic lectionary

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Roman Catholic lectionary for the twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time in Year C

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - sometimes in a limited setting.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: Jeremiah 38: 4-6, 8-10 - the prophet Jeremiah is thrown into a well to die - but Ebed-melech interceded with the king, who had him rescued.

Psalm: 39 - Lord come to my aid / I waited for the Lord / He drew me from the deadly pit / He put a new song into my mouth

Second: Hebrews 12:1-4 - We should throw off anything that hinders - especially sin - and keep running steadily in the race.   Let us not lose sight of Jesus.

Gospel:   Luke 12:49-53 - I am here to bring division - households will be divided against themselves - sons against fathers, mothers against daughters.

Themes

God as our protector in times of difficulty.   The Christian life is not easy - solidarity, strength for the journey.  Setting the world on fire.
