LiturgyTools.net: Hymns for the Memorial (17 August) and anniversary (21 August) of Our Lady of Knock

A selection of hymn and song suggestions suitable for use on the Memorial of Our Lady of Knock.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), meanig the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing - although sometimes in a limited setting. Many of these hymns are old / traditional - but where possible a variety of styles and genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still subject to copyright may also be included, if they are particularly appropriate.

Seasonal note

The Marian apparitions at Knock in the west of Ireland occurred on 21 August 1879, and were investigated in depth in 1879 and 1936.

Despite this timeframe, there do not seem to have been any particular hymns associated with the devotion until the mid/late 20th century, when Dana (Rosemary Scallon) popularised "Our Lady of Knock" a hymn written by her family.

A specific memorial was added to the liturgical calendar from 2012. It is on 17 August, rather than the 21st, because of the timing of existing feast-days.

Readings and Propers

The readings of the day are used for Masses celebrated on this Memorial. However there are specific Propers which may be used instead of the ones for the day::

Entrance Antiphon Lk 1:28, 42

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

Collect

O God, who give hope to your people in a time of distress,
grant that we who keep the memorial of the Blessed Virgin, Our Lady of Knock
may, through her intercession, be steadfast in the faith during our earthly pilgrimage to heaven,
and so come to eternal glory with all the angels and the Saints.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Lord, sanctify these gifts that we offer you
and grant, through the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
that our hearts always seek out and treasure the things that are yours.

Prayer after Communion

Having been nourished at the banquet of the heavenly Lamb,
we humbly beseech you Lord,
that we, who have honoured in veneration
the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
may live for you always in justice and holiness,
and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart.
