Hymns for the 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany, Year B - Revised Common Lectionary (21 Jan 2024)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the third Sunday of after Epiphany, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are still copyright, but are a particularly good fit for the day's readings, are also included.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 - The Lord sends Jonah to preach in Nineveh - the people were converted and God repented and did not inflict on them the disaster he had threatened.

Psalm: 62 - For God alone my soul waits in silence.

Second: I Corinthians 7: 29-31 - Our time is growing short ... the world as we know it is passing away.

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 - Jesus calls the fishermen Simon and Andrew, and James and John - to follow him.

Themes

God teaches us his ways.   Come, follow me.   Jesus teaching repentance, as Jonah did.
