Hymns for Proper 28 / Ordinary 33 in Year B (26th Sunday after Pentecost, 17 November 2024) - Revised Common Lectionary

Hymns and song suggestions, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the Sunday of Proper 28 / Ordinary Time 33, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included. A small selection of hymns that are still copyright, but are a particularly good fit for the day's readings, are also included.

Suggestions about other free-to-use hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Readings

First:
1 Samuel 1:4-20 - Hannah prayed in deep distress - Eli the priest heard her, "Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him."  She conceived and bore a son, who she named Samuel.
OR
Daniel 12:1-13 - There will be a time of great distress ... your own people will be spared

Psalm: 15 -  Preserve me God I take refuge in you /  You are my portion and cup / My heart rejoices / You show me the path of life

Second: Hebrews 10:11-14, 19-25 - Christ offered one single sacrifice for sins, then took his place at God's right hand

Gospel: Mark 13:1-8 - The end:  destruction of the world, be aware of the signs - and false signs ... but the end is still to come.  For nation will rise against nation ...there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning

Themes

Last days, end times:   being prepared, faithfulness to God.   Salvation.
