Hymns for the 4th Sunday of Easter, Year A - Revised Common Lectionary (30 April 2023)

Hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common lectionary for the 4th Sunday of Easter, Year A.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free), so the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing. Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.

A small selection of hymns which are still copyright may also be included, if they are particularly relevant.

Readings

First: Acts 2:42-47  - The early church:  devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers  ... many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.  All who believed were together and had all things in common ... they broke bread at home and ate ... with glad and generous hearts ... The Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Psalm: 23 - The Lord is my shepherd / he guides me along the right path / You have prepared a banquet for me / Surely goodness and kindness.

Second: I Peter 2:19-25 - Merit in the sight of God is bearing punishment patiently ... now you have have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Gospel: John 10: 1-10 - Jesus said "I am the gate of the sheepfold, anyone who enters through me will be safe .. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.
