Hymns for the 6th Sunday of Easter, Year B - Revised Common Lectionary (5 May 2024)

A selection of hymns and songs, based on themes from the Revised Common Lectionary for the sixth Sunday of Easter, Year B.

Most are free-to-use (ie public domain or copyright-free) meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.  Many such hymns are old/traditional - but where possible a variety of styles / genres are included.  A small selection of hymns which are, or may be, still copyright are also included where they are a particularly good for for the theme(s).

Suggestions about hymns that could be included are welcome: leave a comment below.

Readings

First: Acts 10:44-48 - Peter visits Cornelius' household, and the Holy spirit is poured out even on the Gentiles and they speak in tongues. “God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” So Peter ordered them to be baptised.

Psalm 97 (98) - The Lord has shown his salvation to the nations / sing a new song to the Lord /All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Second  1 John 5:1-6 - Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God -  we love the children of God, when we love God ... For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments.   Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood.

Gospel: John 15:9-17- Jesus says: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you.
.

Themes

Choosing and being chosen. We are chosen by God. God's love for us - and its implications, our call to love others.  The Spirit, and God's love.  Equality - God is for all nations and races.
